Estepona Says Farewell to American Rocker Danny Vaughn
After 12 years living in Estepona, American rock singer Danny Vaughn and his wife Melissa have relocated to the countryside near Vélez-Málaga. But there's little time to settle in, with Tyketto embarking on a European tour following the release of their latest album, Closer to the Sun.
If you cut Estepona-based Danny Vaughn with a knife, rather than see blood, you would probably hear the sound of music coming from him.
Born in America, Danny moved to Spain many years ago and, for the last 12 years, has lived in the same apartment by the coast in Estepona.
However, Danny and his wife Melissa have been caught up in an issue affecting many residents across the Costa del Sol: rising property prices and the difficulty of finding affordable rental accommodation.
In their case, the landlord decided to sell the property, leaving the couple searching for a new home.
After struggling to find somewhere suitable, they eventually discovered an ideal property in the countryside and hills near Vélez-Málaga, where they have now relocated.
A New Home, But Little Time to Settle In
The move has come at a particularly busy time for Danny, who has just celebrated his 65th birthday.
Tyketto, the band he fronts, has embarked on a European tour that includes Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland, alongside first-time visits for the band to Hungary and Slovakia.
The schedule also includes seven UK dates in November and a performance in Greece, with plans for a US tour in 2027.
Despite reaching 65, Danny remains an energetic performer. His flowing locks may now be silver, but his stage presence shows little sign of slowing down.
From Waysted to Tyketto
Danny Vaughn's musical career stretches back to the 1980s.
He first came to prominence as the vocalist with Waysted, the band formed by former UFO bass player Pete Way.
Danny provided the vocals on Waysted's 1986 album Save Your Prayers.
He subsequently formed Tyketto, becoming the voice behind the band's early recordings and one of its most recognisable songs, Forever Young.
Danny Vaughn: The Music
Early career: Lead vocalist with Waysted, including the 1986 album Save Your Prayers.
Best known for: Fronting Tyketto and the rock anthem Forever Young.
Latest album: Tyketto's Closer to the Sun, released in 2026.
Career: Involved in the release of 16 albums, both with bands and as a solo artist.
Tyketto initially enjoyed significant success with Forever Young, a song that captured the sound of melodic rock during the MTV era.
However, the band's emergence coincided with a major change in musical tastes, as grunge began replacing the so-called hair bands in mainstream popularity.
Although Tyketto continued to attract a dedicated following, widespread recognition proved more elusive than many fans believed the band deserved.
A Working Musician Through and Through
Danny has remained committed to music throughout his life, participating in the release of no fewer than 16 albums, either with bands or as a solo performer.
Speaking to him is a pleasure. He comes across as warm, interesting and remarkably free of ego, with a genuine desire to entertain and enjoy life as a working musician.
It has not always been easy.
With members of Tyketto previously based on both sides of the Atlantic, rehearsing and touring together became increasingly expensive and complicated.
The current line-up is now based entirely in Europe and the UK, making the logistics of performing together considerably easier.
The band was preparing for a major tour when the Covid pandemic struck, forcing those plans to be postponed.
During lockdown, Danny continued writing and performing online, collaborating with other musicians whose careers had also been interrupted.
As soon as live performances were possible again, he returned to the stage.
That included acoustic performances at local venues, private parties — particularly in the UK, where he has a substantial following — and voice-over work for radio and computer games.
Life in Spain and a Busy Touring Schedule
Although American, Danny holds Spanish residency, which helps him manage the demands of international touring.
The band also benefits from having its members based closer together, although transporting equipment and dealing with the necessary paperwork remains part of life on the road.
With a new album and an extensive touring schedule, there is certainly no suggestion that Danny is considering retirement.
Melissa Vaughn and Eco Amigos
Any story about Danny would be incomplete without mentioning his wife Melissa.
A popular figure on the Costa del Sol, Melissa has frequently supported local charitable activities, including modelling at charity fashion shows.
More recently, she established Eco Amigos, an initiative bringing volunteers together to remove rubbish from beaches along the coast between Sabinillas and Estepona.
Melissa also plays an important role in supporting Danny's musical career and helping to manage his many professional commitments.
Although the couple have said farewell to Estepona, they remain hopeful that Tyketto will return to Spain for future performances.
Will Tyketto Return to Spain?
For now, Danny's attention is firmly on the road, with a European tour underway and further international dates planned.
His departure from Estepona marks the end of a 12-year chapter, but not the end of his connection with the Costa del Sol.
Fans hoping to see Danny and Tyketto perform in Spain again will be watching the band's future tour announcements with interest.
